News of the 18th Days of European Film

The 18th DAYS OF EUROPEAN FILM (DEF) festival of current European cinematography will take place this year in Prague in the Světozor and Lucerna cinemas from April 14 to April 21. It will then continue in Brno in the Bakala cinema on April 22-26, 2011.

The Echoes of the Days of European Film will be held in the following regions this year:
Boskovice (April 26-29); Jablonec nad Nisou (April 27-May 1); Olomouc (April 25-28); Uherské Hradiště (April 26-28); Veselí nad Moravou (April 27-30).

Festival dramaturge Zdeněk Blaha has told us more about the programme of the 18th event and its novelties:

The 18th Days of European Film 2011 will follow up last year's festival presenting some basic sections that will also appear this year. The audience can again look forward to the selection of European films that have been nominated for Oscar awards in the category of best non-English-speaking film (National League section), a section devoted to the European Commission's current issue - volunteerism (section To the Point) - and a new section of films nominated for the European Parliament's award, the LUX Prize. This year we will also pay attention to European films with music as their main theme, either feature or documentary films, in the Film&Music section. The 18th Days of European Film will again present some 40 films from the past two years from over 25 European countries that participate in the festival. The programme will as usual offer afternoon screenings for schools.

The Prague part of the festival will be opened with a film about a love triangle, Three (2010), by renowned contemporary German film director Tom Tykwer, that is set in present-day Berlin. In his latest film Tykwer again handles his favourite issues of love and human relations and touches upon the timeless questions of life and death. For the first time he deals with current problems of individual freedom, sexual orientation and necessary tolerance. Tom Tykwer ranks among prominent European film directors and his work only proves that he is not stagnating, but is always trying to seek new paths as he showed in his past film Run Lola Run, which made him famous, and in the recent historical epic Perfume – The Story of a Murderer. In his latest film Three, Tykwer returns to Europe and partially to his previous dramatic stories even though this film is untraditionally a comedy. Consequently, it was his clear choice, Zdeněk Blaha has revealed.
