FILM & MUSIC: Soundtrack Takes the Lead

March 28, 2026

After the bold debuts in the First Time section, another competitive block at the Days of European Film literally plays its own tune this year. The Film & Music section presents films in which music is not just an accompaniment, but the driving force of the story, emotions, and style. From a rap industry scam through an absurd road movie to an archival psychedelic trip and Celtic rhythms – here music tells the story, provokes, and often steals the show from the actors.

This section shows how diversely music can function in European cinema: as a tool of humour, nostalgia, social critique, or pure visual-musical ecstasy. All the films compete for the award in the Film & Music category and offer an experience that often feels like a concert in the cinema.

California Schemin' (California Schemin', United Kingdom, dir. James McAvoy)

The directorial debut of British star James McAvoy. The film tells the crazy true story of two Scottish rappers from Dundee who, in the early 2000s, pretended to be Californian hip-hop stars to land a record deal. Fast-paced, funny and energetic, with a great rap soundtrack and plenty of British humour. After its premiere in Toronto and closing the Glasgow Film Festival, it brings a solid dose of musical scam to Prague.

Hen (Hen, Hungary/Germany/Greece, dir. György Pálfi)

The eccentric Hungarian director, known for the cult film Taxidermia, has made a tragicomic thriller whose main character is… a hen. A wild road movie about escaping a poultry farm that criticises human greed and social inequality. The film impresses with its visual invention and a striking musical score that underlines both the absurd and darker tones of the story. One of the most unusual titles of the entire festival.

Maspalomas (Maspalomas, Spain, dir. Aitor Arregi & Jose Mari Goenaga)

A sensitive and melancholic drama about an ageing gay man who, after a stroke, ends up in a conservative nursing home and has to hide his identity again. An intimate film in which music gently connects emotions, memories and desire. A powerful story about self-acceptance, old age and human fragility.

Nova 78' (Nova 78', Portugal/Luxembourg, dir. Rodrigo Areias & Aaron Brookner)

An archival documentary trip to New York in 1978. The film draws on newly discovered footage from the legendary Nova Convention – a multimedia event celebrating William S. Burroughs with appearances by icons such as Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson and Frank Zappa. A psychedelic soundtrack and the raw energy of the underground scene of the 1970s make this an unforgettable experience for fans of the Beat Generation and experimental music.

Celtic Utopia (Celtic Utopia, Sweden, Ireland, dir. Dennis Harvey, Lars Lovén)

A poetic and rhythmic film that connects traditional Celtic music with visions of utopia. The music here is not mere background but directly shapes the atmosphere and the storytelling.

The Film & Music section this year proves that the best films sometimes begin not with words, but with a tone. Whether you are looking for rap energy, experimental soundscapes or emotional melodies, this part of the programme offers a unique experience that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
