“How to Edit Sorrentino?” Masterclass with Legendary Editor Cristiano Travaglioli

April 11, 2026

On Friday, 10 April, one of the most anticipated events of the festival took place at Kino Přítomnost – a masterclass with Cristiano Travaglioli, longtime editor and key collaborator of Paolo Sorrentino.

Travaglioli, whose editing credits include The Great Beauty (Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film), Youth, Il Divo, The Grace (La Grazia), and This Must Be the Place, is one of the most respected figures in contemporary Italian cinema. During the more than hour-long masterclass, he spoke openly about his work with one of the most acclaimed directors of our time.

One of the highlights came when Travaglioli revealed which of their joint films both he and Sorrentino consider their most perfect work — a film they would not change a single frame of. He also shared who tends to endlessly search for new versions and who usually says: “Enough, let’s leave it as it is.” Equally fascinating was his description of the director-editor relationship, which he compared to long-term therapy, where the roles of patient and therapist occasionally switch.

The masterclass was moderated by Cristina Groșan. It was filled with personal anecdotes and practical insights into rhythm, music, emotion, and the deep trust that must exist between a director and an editor.

After the masterclass, audiences had the chance to see The Grace (La Grazia), Sorrentino’s latest film, which Travaglioli also edited.

This masterclass was far more than a technical lecture — it offered a rare and inspiring glimpse into the creative process of one of the most remarkable director-editor partnerships in contemporary cinema. It also confirmed why the tribute to Paolo Sorrentino is one of the strongest highlights of this year’s festival.

The following Sorrentino films are screening as part of the tribute:

Il Divo, The Grace (La Grazia), Youth, This Must Be the Place, and The Great Beauty.
